Women Officers to Get Permanent Commission
New Delhi: On Tuesday the Defence Minister  said in a statement that women will be eligible to get permanent commission in all ten branches of Army where they have been admitted as Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSC)
 Till date in India Women Officers were allowed to get permanent commissions only in two branches; that is in Judge Advocate General (JAG) and Army Education Corps. But now they will be granted permanent commission in Intelligence,Signals, Engineers, Army Aviation, Army Air Defence, Mechanical Engineers, Electronics, Army Service Corps, Army Ordinance Corps.

“SSC women officers will give their option for permanent commission before completion of four years of Commissioned Service, and they will exercise option for grant of permanent commission and their choice of specialisation,” the ministry said.

“SSC women officers will be considered for grant of permanent commission “based on suitability, merit etc and will be employed in various staff appointment,” The Defence Minister added which  was in line with the steps taken after the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech of Independence Day.

Last year during Independence day the Prime Minister addressed the nation from the ramparts of Red Forts and announced that women officers who are inducted under short service commission in Armed Forces will have the option for taking Permanent Commission, which he mentioned as a “Gift” to the “Brave Daughters” of our Country.

So with all the processing ” The Ministry of Defence has implemented all the steps regarding the announcement made by Prime Minister on Independence day and came out with the granting of permanent commission to the women officers in Armed Forces.

They further added ; All Branches, including fighter pilots are now open for women officers in Indian Air Force( IAF).

And  “In Indian Navy all non-sea going branches/cadre/specialization have been opened for admitting of women officers through Short Service Commission. In addition to education, law and naval constructor branch/cadre, women short service commissioned  officers have been made eligible for grant of permanent commission in the naval armament branch, at par with male officers,” the officials from Ministry of Defence said.

Fresh changes have also been implemented which gives opportunity to  women officers in the Indian Navy.

The Ministry also said that “The proposal for admitting of three new training ships for the Navy is underway.”

In last year on the occasion of 72nd Independence day Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech that, “I want to give a good news to our brave daughters. Women officers who have been appointed through the short service commission in the armed forces will get permanent commission through a transparent process. It is a gift for them.”

In General, In the short service commission  officers are allowed tenures ranging from five to  fourteen years of services. Permanent commission will allows them to serve till the age of retirement.

SSC women officers will  be given their option for choosing permanent commission before completion of four years of Commissioned Service, and they will exercise option for grant of permanent commission and their choice of specialization.
